Donate Stuff:
Lots of people from all over the US send us their stuff. All kinds of stuff. Some stuff, like gently used or new toys, we give directly to the kids. Other things, like slightly outdated electronics go up for auction on ebay. And still other really cool stuff, like gorgeous photography, we sell at our annual party. So far we're still holding out for the donation of a new (or used) van to cart kids around in.
If you're curious about how non-cash donations work...
If the merchandise you've donated is worth less than $500, you simply list the amount on your 1040's Schedule A. If you report donations worth more than $500, you have to fill out IRS form 8283. On the form 8283, you have to identify and value the items — noting when you bought them, approximately, and how much you paid for them. For any item worth more than $250, you need a receipt from the charity. And for any single item worth more than $5000, you have to get an independent appraisal.
