On June 25th 944 Magazine and 2BFree hosted eXtreme giving ’06, a high-energy fundraiser for Project Nightlight in Santa Monica. Project Nightlight is a non-profit organization that uses extreme sports, hip fashion, music and short films to grab teen’s attention and empower them to speak out against child abuse.
Attendees had a great time watching skateboarding legends, scooping up new duds in the fashion boutique and partaking of delicious food donated by The Spanish Kitchen and Pizza Rustica. Diageo Brands provided fabulous drinks for all, which were served by the men and women of the Beautiful Bartenders who donated their time to help the cause. Red Bull kicked off the event with their oversized Pinzgaursound system on wheels, pumping the music of DJ Jason Serrano. The Bikers Against Child Abuse then rode their Harley’s in to a cheering crowd, while tearing it up on the red carpet. Kevin Pereira of G4 kept the enthusiasm up and the donations pouring in as the official event host.
The highlight of the afternoon was getting to see skateboarding legends like Ray Flores rock out on the Project Nightlight skate ramps alongside the All Girl Skate Jam and several other pro’s such as Eric Tuma Britton and Bennett Harada. Once Ray got off his board, he stepped up and led a live auction of 15 vintage surf and skateboards donated by none other than Ray’s own shop, The Board Gallery.

Then Nathan Pratt, jumped on the mic and auctioned off a rare photo-documentary of the rise of skateboarding, signed by 50 of the worlds most legendary skaters. Only 80 copies of this book exist in the world and thanks to Nathan Pratt and his company Z-BOY, a very lucky Project Nightlight supporter got their grubby little hands on one.
To conclude the event, two very important ladies were recognized as Project Nightlight Women of the year. Ellen Schovenec, from Vista Media, was recognized for being the woman personally responsible for placing the child abuse hotline on 200 corners in Los Angeles and to Louise Grasmehr who spearheads all of Project Nightlight’s collaborations through her department at The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services. Both women received skateboards from The Board Gallery to keep the Project Nightlight energy alive in the privacy of their own neighborhood skate park.
This young crowd opened up their hearts and wallets and purchased over $12,000 worth of items; including everything from unique adventures in Colorado to the colorful Nutcase Helmets and Arbor Skateboards to autographed guitars and Loomstate jeans. |
