June- September 2008 - Project Nightlight started offering weekly Boxervate classes to teenage boys living in group children's homes at Masada Homes. Boxervate was created by famous boxing trainer, Harwood Hamilton. Boxervate combines physical and physcological exercises. All people get angry and frustrated at times, but it is important to learn how to channel that frustration in a positive way and work through it. Boxervate gives the teens an outlet for their frustration. It also exhausts the boys to the point where they want to quit, but they are encouraged to push beyond what they thought were their physical limits. When the boys get tired, the mental exercises kick in. Using terminiology and metaphors from boxing, the boys learn the meaning of perserverance and discipline and focus. Harwood teaches classes every Saturday and is assisted by Project Nightlight volunteer/Martial Arts Expert/ Editing Extraordinaire, Amanda Elliott. To help or join a class, email Amanda.
"I've noticed that since we started this program with the kids that they are really into it and listen closely to what Harwood is teaching them. Harwood helps them channel their thoughts and energy to be used constructively to help with everyday situations. You can tell the kids listen to him and also have a respect him for what he's doing. Its only been a few weeks and we can see an improvement in these guys. Their confidence is up and they are smiling more. I'm very glad to be a part of it." - Program Coordinator, Amanda 'Ace' Elliott

Child abuse can rob a child of their confidence. At these sessions, Megan teaches the girls how to protect themselves from child abuse and the damaging affects that it can have on a young person's well being.

March 2008 - Bikers Against Child Abuse at Burbank Boys and Girls Club
Project Nightlight and our partner, Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA), visited the Burbank Boys and Girls Club. In case you don't know... BACA is an amazing group of men and women who physically protect children. Kind of like a child's own personal bodyguard. They are a life saving resource for kids who are so afraid of their abuser that they won't tell anyone that they are being abused. BACA members will travel with a child to court and offer support, they will go to a child's home (or foster home) or even make sure that a child makes it home from school safely. Wherever the child is afraid, they have a BACA friend to make them feel safe. Click here for pics of our day at the Burbank Boys and Girls Club with BACA.
BACA Mission Statement
Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) exists with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. We exist as a body of Bikers to empower children to not feel afraid of the world in which they live. We stand ready to lend support to our wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization. We work in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. We desire to send a clear message to all involved with the abused child that this child is part of our organization, and that we are prepared to lend our physical and emotional support to them by affiliation, and our physical presence. We stand at the ready to shield these children from further abuse. We do not condone the use of violence or physical force in any manner, however, if circumstances arise such that we are the only obstacle preventing a child from further abuse, we stand ready to be that obstacle.
